What is coolant, and what purpose does it serve for your vehicle? Coolant is an automotive fluid that transfers heat and helps to stabilize the temperature of your car’s engine block and engine parts. Thanks to the special additives in coolant, it won’t freeze or get any hotter than 212 degrees Fahrenheit. Questions about how to check the coolant level in your car? The service center at Sonia's Chrysler Dodge Jeep RAM covers everything that Orange, MA drivers should know!
Learning how to check your coolant level is even earlier than checking your oil! There’s no need to open the radiator cap to see how much coolant is in the reservoir. You can easily see what is the right coolant level for your car by taking a look at the “Full” marking on the side of the reservoir. If the coolant level reaches this marking, you don’t need to add any more.
If the level is low, it’s time to top off the coolant level. Before attempting to add coolant, make sure your car has been sitting idle long enough for the engine to be cool, typically about half an hour. Also, be sure not to touch the radiator cap while the engine is hot. Depending on the coolant you’re using, you may have to mix it 50/50 with water. Check the container to see whether you need to dilute it or can add it to the reservoir directly.
It may be necessary to have your coolant replaced if it becomes dirty or contaminated, which can happen if your car has an internal gasket leak that’s draining the coolant from the reservoir. What is coolant supposed to look like? Coolant should be thinner than oil, but thicker than water. The color can be blue, green, yellow, or red — but shouldn’t be brown or colorless. Brown and sludgy coolant often signals a larger issue that should be addressed by a technician, so be sure to schedule an appointment at an Orange, MA-area auto service center soon!
Even if you don’t have a coolant leak, it’s still important to know how to check coolant levels. That’s because the coolant level will deplete naturally over time, which means that the coolant will be less effective at keeping your engine cool. We recommend checking your coolant level every three to six months.
